Need a break from the heat? Rainy day? Are the kids bored? Looking for a good read for the pool or beach or an activity for the kids? Maybe you would like to learn a new skill or just escape from the house?  Come to the Summit Free Public Library this August where we’ve got activities for every member of the family, young and old!

ADULT ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS
FREE COMPUTER TRAINING CLASSES

Interested in learning Excel? Already know how to use Excel or Word and looking to expand your knowledge?  We have both introductory and next level classes.  Registration is required and limited for each class—classes fill up quickly.  Call 908-273-0350, ext. 3 to reserve a spot.

Excel Tips and Tricks: For those who work with spreadsheets daily and would like to take their knowledge to the next level.  You will learn useful tips and tricks that will make your use of Excel easier. Want to improve your Excel skills? This is the class for you. Wed, Aug 8, 6:30-8:30 pm.

Learn Mail Merge: Do you wish to simplify your personal, non-profit or small business mailings? Learn how to use the Mail Merge feature in MS Word to create personalized letters/ labels using mailing lists you have created in Excel. Wed, Aug 15, 6:30-8:30 pm.


Brown Bag Book Club: Our monthly book club for adults continues and all are invited to join!  This month’s selection is Rules of Civility by Amor Towles.  We’ve got copies of the book available for checkout.  We’ll be meeting for a friendly lunchtime discussion on Fri, Aug 17 from 12:30-1:30 pm.

Union County Senior Services “ASK” the Experts about Senior Services: The Union County Division on Aging and Disability Resource Connection brings their Aging Services Kiosk (ASK) to the Summit Library on Monday, August 27 from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. Summit residents seeking information about services for seniors age 60 and older can receive advice and information about home delivered meals, respite care, home care, adult day care support services for caregivers, and more. The ASK program also helps with completing applications. Assistance is given on a one-to-one basis and is available in English and Spanish.

KIDS & TEENS ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS

Libraries Rock! Summer Reading Program registration continues all summer long—open to toddlers through teens!  Summer Reading Program participants entering grades 1-12 can visit the library at the beginning of August to take home a free pass to the Summit Family Aquatic Center!  Everyone wins when everyone reads, but kids and teens also can win prizes throughout the summer. All grand prizes in our Summer Reading Program will be pulled after Labor Day.  Visit our Youth Services Department if you’d like to know more about signing up for our Summer Reading Program.

TEEN ACTIVITIES (GRADES 6-12)

In Case of the “Alpaca”lypse!: Come to the library to meet and show some LLAMA LLOVE to an Alpaca. Wed, Aug 8, 2:00-3:00 pm.

SLJTeen Live!  Drop in and attend a virtual conference featuring Young Adult authors that will stream live from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  No registration required.  Wed, August 15.

Summer Reading Had me a Blast!: Join us for an “After Hours” Friday open mic night. Signed permission slip is required. To fill out a permission slip go to www.summitlibrary.org or visit the Ask Us Desk in the Youth Services Department.  Fri, Aug 17, 4:45-6:30 pm (library closes at 5 on Fridays, make sure you arrive before we lock the doors!).

IT’S ELEMENTARY! ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS ENTERING GRADES 1-5

Fight the “Mom, I’m Bored!” Syndrome: We’ve got activities for elementary-aged kids on every Tuesday and Thursday at 4 pm through August 23rd!  If you can’t make it at that time, they can always drop in for Band on the Run and create musical instruments in our Think It Lab—it’s open every day!  Here’s a sampling of a few upcoming programs (space is limited, please register for the following programs by calling 908-273-0350, ext.  825 or go online to www.summitlibrary.org and click on the Event Calendar tab):

Move to the Music Bollywood Style:  Join us to learn about the beats of music and cool dance styles of India made popular in many Indian movies. Put on your dancing shoes and get ready to move and groove Bollywood style!  Tues, Aug 7, 4:00-5:00 pm.

PRESCHOOL ACTIVITIES FOR OUR YOUNGEST PATRONS—MUST BRING YOUR ADULT! (AGES 2-K)

Every Tuesday we’ve got Mother Goose Mornings filled with songs, stories, and movement at 10 and 10:30 am that you’re welcome to drop into!  Tuesdays at noon we’re at the Summit Family Aquatic Center doing storytime. You can also find us on Wednesdays, August 1, 8, 15, and 23rd at noon on the Village Green for Picnic with a Librarian (we move inside when it’s raining).   Special programs requiring registration (call 908-273-0350 ext 825 or go to www.summitlibrary.org and click on the Event Calendar tab) include:

Rock Stars in Training!: Preschoolers are invited to join us to explore music, dance, and stories.  Thursdays, Aug 9, 16, and 23, 10:00-11:00 am.

Wheels on the Bus:  Dig into stories and songs about cars, trucks, and diggers! Mon, Aug 13, 11:00-12 Noon.

Down at the Station:  All aboard for a storytime that’s all about trains! Mon, Aug 20, 11:00-12 Noon.
