David Brearley Students Attend the NJ Teen Arts Festival
Brearley students from the musical theater performance group and two student artists were chosen to participate in the NJ State Teen Arts Festival held this spring at Ocean County College.
Janice Marsili, Brearley Art Instructor stated, “Being chosen to exhibit or perform at the State Teen Arts Festival is a wonderful experience for the students. They have the opportunity to witness the highest level of student achievement in the arts and to receive critiques of their work from the most respected professionals in the state.”
21 members from the cast of The Addams Family attended and performed two numbers from the musical for a panel of Broadway veterans. Paul Weinstein, Brearley Theater Director, stated, “The entire cast and crew were very pleased with the critiques we were given – several students’ individual performances were celebrated, along with the dedication of the entire cast in the group numbers. The students were thrilled and had a wonderful time performing!”
All Brearley students’ critiques were extremely positive. Senior Jenielle Westlock’s clay sculpture, ‘Monster of Many Tongues’, received a perfect score. In addition, she was 1 of 30 students to be honored with a Silver Spotlight Award in 3-D Visual Arts. High school Junior, Julia Pelesz was also selected to exhibit her work of art. The students attended workshops and watched dance, theater and musical performances and took in a display of the best student artwork from each county in the state.
