NJ Sharing Network recently made strategic appointments to its Board of Trustees to further fulfill the organization’s mission of saving lives through organ and tissue donation. Ciro Scalera, Director of Governmental Relations for New Jersey Laborers’ – Employers Cooperation and Education Trust (NJLECET), now joins the NJ Sharing Network Board of Trustees. NJLECET is a joint labor-management fund of the NJ Laborers’ Union and represents 25,000 laborers in NJ and their signatory contractors. Scalera is responsible for Legislative Affairs and assists in business development for the Trust.
Prior to joining NJLECET, Scalera served as Director of Public Affairs for Verizon. Prior to joining Verizon in 2002, Scalera was Chief of Management and Policy for the NJ Office of the Governor, reporting to Governor Donald T. DiFrancesco. Before his position in the Governor’s Office, he was Executive Director at the Association for Children of New Jersey for 23 years.
Scalera has served on over 10 Boards in his career including the Board of the NJ Economic Development Authority from 2002-2006 and served for more than seven years on the Berkeley Heights Board of Education. In addition to the NJ Sharing Network Board of Trustees, Scalera currently serves as the Chairman of the newly established Foundation for University Hospital in Newark, one of six transplant centers in New Jersey.

Scalera received his BA and his MBA from Rutgers University. He also has a J.D. from San Francisco Law School.
To date, there are over 120,000 people waiting for a transplant and 22 die each day while waiting, but one organ donor can save eight lives and one tissue donor can restore health to over 75 people. In New Jersey, there are over 4,000 people on the waiting list – 286 in Union County alone – and one person dies every three days waiting.
