Explore Your World: Minicourses for Adults
Our U.S. Supreme Court from Birth to Present Day: Is it the Least Dangerous Branch?
Fridays, starting September 14, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. through October 19.

Adults get their chance to go back to school this month at the Summit Free Public Library with the launch of our free Explore Your World: Minicourses for Adults series. Our first minicourse, Our U.S. Supreme Court from Birth to Present Day: Is it the Least Dangerous Branch? kicks off the series on September 14, 2018. This fascinating six week free lecture series examines the Court from its establishment under Article III of the US Constitution through present day. Supreme Court expert, Dr. Ian Drake, Associate Professor of Political Science at Montclair State University, will walk you through the Court’s evolution, from its beginnings through to modern day landmark cases such as Roe v. Wade and the recent Masterpiece Cakeshop decision. Class participants will wend their way through the Civil War days of the Court, examine the impact of The New Deal and how the Great Depression shaped Court decisions, and will discover how the Supreme Court wrestled with the Civil Rights movement. You will also learn interesting facts along the way—did you know the Supreme Court as established was to have a total of six Justices, however for most of its history there have been nine? Register online at www.summitlibrary.org, go to the Event Calendar tab or call 908-273-0350, ext. 3. Funded through the generosity of the Summit Area Public Foundation.

Topics each week will be:

9/14: The Early Court
9/21: From Civil War to Progressivism
9/28: The New Deal
10/5: Civil Rights
10/12: Abortion Rights
10/19: Today’s Court
