Watchung Hills Regional High School (WHRHS) Class of 2021 student Anthony Roca of Warren Township has been selected for recognition by the National Hispanic Recognition Program as an Hispanic Scholar, according to a release from the College Board National Recognition Programs (CBNRP).

Roca had been extended an invitation last spring to apply for the recognition based upon his scores last Fall in the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). His scores were in the top 2.5 percent of test takers. Qualifiers also had to be from one or more of the following categories: African American, Hispanic American or Latinex, Indigenous, or attending school in a rural area, or in a small town.

As with all students selected for consideration for this recognition, Roca’s selection was made following further review of his application and academic achievements.

WHRHS Principal William Librera and WHRHS Director of Guidance Jason Sabino congratulated Roca on his achievement.

Principal Librera said: “We are extremely proud to celebrate Anthony’s tremendous achievement. This recognition of the top 2.5 percent of those taking the assessment is a true testament to Anthony’s aptitude and performance.”

Guidance Director Sabino added: “I’m so pleased to see that Anthony is being recognized for his hard work and commitment to his studies. I’m certain this is one of many recognitions that Anthony will receive related to his academic prowess this year, in college, and beyond.”

In addition to being recognized as being a 2020-2021 Hispanic Scholar, earlier this Fall, Roca was also named along with 29 other WHRHS students to the National Merit Scholarship Commended List.

Earlier this school year, some 11 WHRHS Class of 2021 students have been recognized as National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, which were also based on scores from last Fall’s PSAT/NMSQT.
