The Kenilworth Historical Society will present ‘A Tribute to African Culture’ on Sunday, February 25, 2018, in celebration of Black History Month. The entertaining and educational interactive program, which has value for all age groups, will feature widely acclaimed Rev. Dr. Queen Mother Elaine Lloyd-Nazario, a professional storyteller, vocalist, musician, arts educator, and motivational speaker who over the course of her impressive 40-year career has been building bridges of peace through the arts. The program will take place at the historic Oswald J. Nitschke House, 49 South 21 Street, Kenilworth, New Jersey, at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and $2 for children under the age of 12. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and develop an understanding of an appreciation for African culture through Queen Mother’s engaging storytelling, music, and traditional attire. Light refreshments will be served.
“Queen Mother” is an African traditionally earned title of nobility that recognizes cultural wisdom and community work. Queen Mother also is a respected scholar in ancient Egyptian culture and spirituality. She has brought her programs to schools, museums, festivals, theaters, retreats, and special events and also has hosted/produced her own public radio shows. In addition to her busy touring schedule, she currently teaches a popular Drums of Compassion program at Oakwood Avenue Elementary School in Orange, N.J. As a motivational speaker, she uses the wisdom of ancient African culture to inspire her intercultural following. A former Kenilworth resident, Queen Mother also serves as interfaith Pastor of Shenu Art and Yoga Sanctuary, which teaches the philosophy of art as activism, peace and healing.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Kenilworth Historical Society’s Oswald J. Nitschke House, c. 1880, “living history” museum and cultural arts center by helping defray programming costs. The Nitschke House has an elevator and is fully accessible.
The Kenilworth Historical Society, kenilworthhistoricalsociety.org, is an independent, non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the research, preservation and interpretation of the Oswald J. Nitschke House, local history, and culture.
