PuroClean Restoration Services of Union County, will be participating in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s annual MuckFest MS on Saturday, July 21, 2018 in Somerset, NJ. Their team is called the PuroClean Puddle Jumpers.
The team was formed to support one of their employees, Rachel Schwartz, a resident of Cranford, who was diagnosed with MS in 2009. Rachel started working at PuroClean in 2015 a few years after PuroClean performed water mitigation in her Cranford home from the damage from Hurricane Irene. Robin Hoy, who owns the company along with her husband, Chris, is a co-captain of the team.
Robin and Rachel met in 2008 while training for the Danskin Triathlon along with a group of over 20 Cranford moms. Many of these women, including Robin, Rachel and another employee, Gwen, continued training together to complete another triathlon again in 2009. Unfortunately, shortly before the event, Rachel became ill and was forced to defer her entrance. Robin, Gwen and the others completed this Tri and continued to participate in races. However, Rachel never did complete that second event. Her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis came soon after. Over the years Rachel has been battling this unpredictable and debilitating disease.
With help from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, people get education and assistance with wheelchairs and walkers. The NMSS also helps with progress in drug research for the fight against the disease. The MuckFest is one of three major fundraisers in NJ along with Walk MS and Bike MS. The MuckFest is a fun 5k which participants wallow through mud and overcome creative obstacles in a non competitive atmosphere.
