NUTRITION SERIES: “DEHYDRATION MAKES YOU PRUNEY—THE IMPORTANCE OF STAYING WELL-HYDRATED” – Tues., July 10 at 12:15 p.m. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of hospitalization. Seniors are more at risk for dehydration because body water content and thirst sensation both decrease with age, and decreased kidney function associated with aging can result in electrolyte imbalance. The class is invited to make and taste a variety of summer beverages that help to ensure sufficient hydration. AARP DRIVER SAFETY COURSE – Mon., July 16, 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Refresh your driving skills and knowledge of the rules of the road. This defensive driving program is geared for the “over 50” population by offering help with age-related changes. Course completion could earn you a discount on car insurance. BLUEBERRIES─NEW JERSEY’S WONDER FRUIT, Mon., July 23, 12:30 p.m. Presented by Judith Krall-Russo, food historian. The cultivated berry has roots in the NJ Pinelands. Elizabeth White along with Dr. Fredrick Coville, proved that the “swamp huckleberry” could be cultivated. Learn the history of this fascinating berry and the contribution Elizabeth White of Whitesbog made to their cultivation. Today, the blueberry is touted as a wonder fruit with a host of healthful benefits. Learn about the history, health benefits, and a variety of ways to preserve and savor these berries.
