Rahway has a new Golden Girl. Rose Northcott, a senior at Rahway High School, has earned the most prestigious Girl Scout award the Gold Award. Rose earned the award for her project titled “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” or RRR for short. The project required a minimum of 80 hours of work, however she logged an astonishing 124 hours. Her project consisted of two parts.
First was a lesson used to teach freshman environmental science classes. Collaborating with first year teacher Ms. Carr, Rose created a video lesson to be played in the science classes while she attended her own class. It began with a Do Now, had notes about the importance of Recycle Reduce and Reuse, and ended with a poster project for the students to show what they learned.
The second part of Rose’s project was the creation of a mural that is now permanently displayed in the science wing of Rahway High School. It was painted by a dozen students who volunteered their time after school to complete the mural in time for parent teacher conferences last November. The mural is a depiction of the impact humans have on our environment and why it is important to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Kaila Davila, a fellow student said, “Rose did an excellent job in securing that all of the volunteers and painters were on schedule and stayed neat. Overall it was extremely fun and definitely rewarding working with her, her leadership skills definitely shined through from start to finish.” To boost team morale Rose also created t-shirts for all of her volunteers that helped her earn her gold award.
Rose will officially receive her award on June 5th from the Girl Scouts Heart of NJ council. Rose plans to become a Girl Scout leader in the future.
