Lesson on Perseverance and Teamwork
Warren Township Public Schools
Warren Township students benefit daily from the district’s creative, dedicated, and driven educational staff. However, there is something extraordinary about student-to-student teaching.
Grade 5 students in Ms. Nancy Andrews REACH class Alina Shah, Michelle Zhang, Kiernan Melia, and Chase Surbrug, recently developed, planned, and delivered an entire lesson for Woodland’s grade three students in Mr. Matthew Gamage’s class.
The 5th-grade student-teachers strategized with Andrews to create a Growth Mindset lesson focused on Perseverance and Teamwork. During their planning time, Shah, Zhang, Melia, and Surbrug modified the lesson to provide the most effective and engaging approach to better assist the younger students with meeting the learning objectives.
On the day of the event, the student leaders organized Gamage’s class into small groups. The students moved from station to station throughout the classroom completing tabletop activities as a team to gain a secret digit needed to unlock a treasure box.
The third graders happily worked through each mission and fully engaged in the assignment, while the grade 5 students provided leadership, direction, and encouragement.
Andrews was proud of each student for their participation, “Although only one group was able to unlock the box in the time given, every student was successful because they never gave up as they navigated through each station.”
The REACH department will continue to provide challenges for students that require persistence and grit.
