Westfield High School, Girls Ice Hockey

Submitted by: Beth Ellen Hornstein

A determined Westfield High School sophomore, Ally Hornstein, dreamed of playing hockey for Westfield High School. In December of 2015, Ally and four Westfield moms, Beth Hornstein, Jennifer Katz, Marty McDevitt, and Dianna Snyder helped to turn that dream into a reality. On Tuesday, May 10th, Westfield Board of Education President Gretchan Ohlig, announced the approval of a girls’ hockey team for the 2016-2017 school year. WHS becomes the 11th high school in NJ to have a girls’ ice hockey team and only the third public high school in the state (after Princeton and Summit).
This initiative became reality thanks to the strong support of Sandra Mamary, Athletic Director of Westfield High School, John Devin, President of The Westfield High School Ice Hockey Association, the coaches at Union Sport Arena, and the Westfield Hockey Club. We want to thank the Westfield Superintendant, Dr. Dolan and the Members of the Westfield Board of Education for seeing the need for a WHS Girls’ Ice Hockey team due to the growth in the number of girls who are playing ice hockey. At the meeting, Beth Hornstein thanked the BOE, “The girls will make you very proud.”
