The rain clouds parted and the sun came through just long enough for over a dozen Pack 32 scouts and their families to enjoy a wonderful afternoon canoeing along the Raritan River on a recent Saturday in July.
As they paddled up the river, boys and girls could be seen eagerly looking into the water for creatures of all kinds. Those that traveled quietly were rewarded with the sighting of a snapping turtle. Those that traveled loudly were rewarded with their echo as they passed under one of the many bridges. While resting their arms, parents and grandparents admired the variety of stately and charming homes that run along both sides of the river bank. A few tree houses earned just as much admiration from the kids.
Special thanks go to Ralph Cercelli and his very supportive staff at the Cranford Canoe Club for making this event possible. He not only provided the canoes, paddles, and life vests, but cooked up an incredible lunch on the grill followed by a hand-made ice cream treat. After exerting all that energy navigating the water way, you can bet everyone was hungry. Mr. Cercelli rents out canoes and kayaks throughout the spring, summer and fall. The pack looks forward to returning next year.
