The Mayor of Watchung, Stephen Pote, gave the opening remarks at this year’s 9/11 memorial ceremony. This years’ service included the unveiling of Watchung’s 9/11 memorial “A Journey of the Heart,” dedicated to those who perished on 9/11 and in memory of Watchung resident’s Christopher N. Ingrassia and Honor Elizabeth Wainio.
The memorial is located on the Village Green in front of Borough Hall. A piece of steel from the World Trade Center is embedded in a pink heart-shaped block, inside a white marble rectangular block.
The memorial was made possible due to the residents who joined together to create the 9/11 Memorial Committee. Through their volunteering and hard work, this “real labor of love,” as the Mayor proclaimed it, was able to be completed.
“You Committee members are wonderful people with boundlessly huge hearts, and it has been a privilege for me to have been working directly with you on this project,” said the Mayor. “Today I am truly inspired by the love and the passion that went into the planning, the design and the construction of this memorial. It’s beautiful. It’s inspiring. And it is important to remember all that it represents. God Bless all of you on this Patriot Day. Thank you.”
