Warrenbrook Senior Center located at 500 Warrenville Road is one of the six county operated Senior Centers. Somerset County residents who are 60 years and older are welcome to participate in any of the programs at Warrenbrook Senior Center. They also provide a choice of 4 different meal choices during lunch that seniors can take advantage of during the weekdays. All the programs are free for the registered members. Below is the highlight of some of the programs available at Warrenbrook Senior Center in October.
October 2, 11 a.m. – Perseverance – NASA’s Mars Rover – Learn all about NASA’s latest mission to Mars! The Mars 2020 Rover will look for signs of habitable conditions on Mars in the ancient past as well as for signs of past microbial life itself. The rover will be using a drill to collect core samples and set them aside on the surface of Mars for a future mission to potentially return them to Earth. The mission will also demonstrate technologies for future human expeditions to Mars, such as producing oxygen from the Martian atmosphere, identifying water resources, improving landing techniques, and characterizing weather, dust, and other potential environmental conditions that could affect future astronauts living and working on Mars. Perseverance arrived on Mars February 18, 2021 and is expected to explore the planet for several years.
October 4, 11 a.m. –New Jersey’s “Glamorous Governor” Robert Bamle Meyner –Joseph Wroblewski will tell the story of Robert B. Meyner who was a two-term Democrat Governor of New Jersey (1954-1962) – how he got involved in politics, his marriage to Helen Stevenson, and the achievements during his administrations.
October 5, 11 a.m. – Trivia – Potluck Quiz with Angela. We will be playing some General Knowledge, Nursery Rhymes Crimes, Words Starting with and other similar quiz.
October 6, 20, 11 a.m. – Brains n Games and Hand Bells with Adrienne Graubard. Did you know that solving puzzles or challenging yourself with new mind-stretching activities like learning music can stimulate the brain and enhance your creative and critical thinking processes? Join Adrienne for some mind-tingling, brain-stumping word games and a fun-filled musical workout using hand bells.
October 11, 11 a.m. –Musical Entertainmentwith Jim Lutz, Musician, Composer, Bandleader, Sound, and Music Production and Member of the Raritan Valley Trombone Quartet. Jim will coax the beautiful sounds of some of the best crooners of all time out of his trombone and bring this impactful music back to life. Singers such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, etc. were Masters of Jazz standards with strong vocals. Picture this, a smokey ballroom full of people swaying to the music, as crooner singers stand on the stage, serenading them with the standards, many with themes of lost love, found love and other heartfelt sentiments.
October 11, 1:00 p.m. – A Stitch in Time.Needlepoint is the oldest form of canvas work, going back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians. Sue Chadwick, and other members of the NJ Needle Artists, will be joining us to discuss the history of needlepoint, how to get started in needlepoint, and the variety of stitches used. Beautiful examples of their work will be displayed as well.
October 12, 11 a.m. – Armchair Travels to Egypt with Maritza – Egypt! An exotic wonderland of the ancient past where you will find pyramids, temples, and treasure-filled ancient tombs. We will be watching ancient monuments in Egypt and the Mysterious life and Death of Egypt’s Queen Neferiti and will do trivia of English words of Arabic Origins.
October 13, 11 a.m. – Craft – Embroider a Bagwith Parul– Stitch your own design on the bag. Perfect to hold change or small items, the bag has an open weave which makes stitching easy and a zippered top. All materials will be provided. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED
October 16, 11 a.m. – Emergency Preparedness with Joshua O’Neal – It is always a good time to plan and prepare for things that may go wrong. You want to have a plan in place before there is a disaster. With the recent increase in natural disasters and hurricane season starting in September, now is a good time to get information to prepare for possible emergencies in the upcoming months. Please join us for an emergency preparedness presentation that will focus on giving you information on why it is important to prepare, how to prepare, and disasters common to our area.
October 18, 11 a.m. – Bingo with Rashmi – Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits. It promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination, and improves listening and short-term memory skills.
October 19, 11 a.m. – Jeopardy with Parul–Join us as we play Jeopardy where the Categories include Movies, Royalty, True or False, TV Series, and Italy.
October 23, 11 a.m. – Medicare Benefits by Dr. Dara Kass, Reginal Director, Region 2, U.S. Department of Health, and Human Services. Dr. Kass will cover the benefits you can receive from Medicare, including free vaccines, lower cost prescriptions, and OTC hearing aids. Dr. Kass will also give a brief overview of the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act.
October 23, 1:00 p.m. – Breathing techniques for mental wellness – Dr Prabha Srinivas will be teaching Some practices that can be used to distract the mind and induce calm during an anxiety episode. A few techniques can be practiced on a regular basis to develop an ongoing awareness of trigger situations and to calm and regulate the nervous system consistently.
October 26, 11 a.m. – Dice Games with Parul – Dice is one of the oldest game pieces in history. Their origins are unknown, however the earliest physical dice that have been found come from Iran and date back to 2500 B.C. Dice games are fun and versatile and provide social opportunities and stimulate the senses. We will be playing dice games like Cover the Number, Sevens Game, Round the Clock, Draw a Beetle, All 6 Game & 5000.
October 27, 11 a.m. – Craft – Quilt with Parul.Learn about the history of quilting and the 9-patch quilt while working together to create a unique velvet quilt! Color the 25, 8” squares with the markers, then string together to create a beautiful wall hanging. Once the quilt is decorated, we will be hanging it at the senior center. All materials will be provided. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED
October 30, 11 a.m. – Halloween – Borrowing from Irish and English traditions, the idea of dressing up in costume, traveling house to house and asking for food eventually became what we refer to as “trick or treat” in America. Our candy-laden, pumpkin-happy, autumn celebration has its roots in the darker, more spiritual Celtic holiday of Samhain (pronounced SAH-win or SOW-in). Samhain means “summer’s end” in Old Irish, and it marked the end of the harvest time and the start of winter. Come dressed in costume, play Halloween bingo, Halloween Candy Walk and sing Halloween carols.
