Warrenbrook Senior Center located at 500 Warrenville Road is one of the six county operated Senior Center. Somerset County residents who are 60 years and older are welcome to participate in any of the programs at Warrenbrook Senior Center. They also provide a choice of 4 different meal choices during lunch that seniors can take advantage of during the weekdays. All the programs are free for the registered members. Below is the highlight of some of the programs available at Warrenbrook Senior Center in May.
May 3, 11 a.m. – Craft – Maracas – To prepare for the fiesta games we will be getting our maracas ready by painting and decorating them. All materials will be provided. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED
May 6, 11 a.m. – Fiesta Games – To celebrate Cinco de Mayo we will be playing some games like Pass the Sombrero, Limbo, Pin the tail on the Donkey and dance to the Macarena and immerse ourselves into the Mexican culture and sample Mexican chili which consists of vegetarian chili, onions, peppers, tomatoes cilantro, paprika, cumin and cheese with chips.
May 8, 11 a.m. – Mariachi Songs Musical Entertainment-Lorri Woodward will entertain us with Mariachi Songs as we continue our Mexico theme at the senior center.
May 9, 11 a.m.– Breathing techniques for mental wellness– Dr Prabha Srinivas will be teaching some practices that can be used to distract the mind and induce calm during an anxiety episode. A few techniques can be practiced on a regular basis to develop an ongoing awareness of trigger situations and to calm and regulate the nervous system consistently.
May 10, 11 a.m. – Mother’s Day Bouquet of Flowers Craft –Looking for a Mother’s Day craft that will last longer than a bouquet of flowers? Look no further than this vibrant flower bouquet craft kit!
We will be piecing together the brightly colored blooms, and the best part is that they won’t wilt away in just a few days. No green thumb required – this kit is easy and fun to assemble. All materials provided. PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED
May 13, 11 a.m. – Mind Reading Game Show – Flavian Petrulio will lead an interactive and entertaining event where he will read your mind and make you laugh as he reveals the answers to some very funny questions.
May 15, 11 a.m. –Balance & Flexibility Exercise – Nisha Rele BSME, PT, DPT – Clinical Director, Warren Location of AmeriCare Physical Therapy will go over balance and flexibility exercises, stability movements and quick techniques to not only prevent injuries, but also showcase activities that can attribute to an overall healthier, more quality version of life during this interactive session as a part of preventative medicine.
May 16, 30, 11 a.m. – Bingo with Bob Mazet – Bingo is more than just an exciting activity. Researchers found that playing Bingo has multiple benefits. It promotes socialization, strengthens hand-eye coordination, and improves listening and short-term memory skills.
May 17, 31, – 11 a.m. – Brains n Games and Hand Bells with Adrienne Graubard. Did you know that solving puzzles or challenging yourself with new mind-stretching activities like learning music can stimulate the brain and enhance your creative and critical thinking processes? Join Adrienne for some mind-tingling, brain-stumping word games and a fun-filled musical workout using hand bells.
May 20, 11 a.m. – Spring Trivia – Hirey Molligoda from Assisting Hands will be playing the Spring Trivia questions and test your knowledge on all things Spring related as we gather for a fun-filled morning of questions, laughter and friendly competition.
May 22, 11 a.m. – Senior Medicare Patrol & Fraud Prevention by Joel Schneider. New Jersey’s Senior Medicare Patrol helps to not only protect Medicare and Medicaid programs, but also protect you, from fraud. Join Joel to learn about haw to detect and report Medicare fraud, and other scams you should watch out for
May 23, 11 a.m. – Over the Counter Drugs Interactions- Part 2 – Drug interactions with over the counter (OTC) drugs can be a problem. According to the FDA, drug interactions may make your drug less effective, cause unexpected side effects, or increase the action of a particular drug. Some drug interactions can even be harmful to you. It is important to note that OTC drug labels contain information about ingredients, uses, warnings, and directions that is important to read and understand. The label also includes important information about possible drug interactions. You can reduce the risk of potentially harmful drug interactions and side effects with a little bit of knowledge and common sense1. Shivani Shah from Walmart Pharmacy will be explaining about what to look for while taking the OTC drugs.
May 24, 11 a.m. – Memorial Day Paint & Sip with Arista Care – Andrea Maceus from Arista Care will guide us in creating a beautiful artwork while enjoying sugar free lemonade to start off the Memorial Day Celebrations.
May 27 – Senior Center Closed – Memorial Day
May 29, 10:30 a.m. – Blood Pressure Screenings – The students of RVCC will join us and provide free blood pressure screenings. Stop in and check your health. No appointment is necessary.
May 29, 11 a.m. – Older American Month Celebration –Older American Month is an annual celebration in US dedicated to honoring and appreciating the contributions and achievements of older adults. Joshua Van Ness will entertain us with music and songs from the 50s and 60s.
Besides the above program, the below programs take place on weekly basis.
Stretch – Mondays – 10:00 a.m. – Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. The video will guide you through the exercises to improve flexibility & balance. No fee for this ongoing class.
Mahjong for Intermediate Players – Tuesdays, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. If you are an intermediate mahjong player and would like to play this game of skill, strategy, and calculation, then join us on Tuesday mornings.
Zumba Gold with Judith – Tuesdays & Fridays, 10:15 a.m. Get your blood pumping with some zesty music that will truly inspire a hearty workout. This class is achievable for beginners or others who need modifications to their exercise routine. Build cardiovascular health by challenging your heart and working hip, leg, and arm muscles by performing fun and rhythmic moves while sitting in a chair. Cost is $40 for the 8-week program.
Bridge Group with Ronnie – Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain and helps keep your memory active and your brain alert. Join Ronnie and her group as they play bridge on a weekly basis. New members and beginners welcome (lessons available).
Gentle Yoga with Jillian – Tuesdays, 1:00 p.m. & Thursdays at 1-:00 a.m. – This class is open to all levels of skill. Hatha yoga poses can be practiced while either sitting or standing. Hatha yoga will help increase bone density, improve strength, flexibility, and balance while you are immersed in a relaxing class. Expect lots of gentle stretching to bring movement to joints and muscles. This class is perfect for relieving stress and to help gain an overall sense of well-being. Cost is $40 for the 8-week program.
Strength – Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m. – This exercise program is designed to develop strength and enhance the ability to function in daily life. The exercise can be done with or without weights. The hand weight of 2-5 pounds is recommended, which can be brought by the clients for exercise. No fee for this ongoing class.
Art Hour with Jean – Wednesdays, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. – This is a great opportunity for an artist to meet new people while creating an art piece using either watercolor or acrylics. We all work on doing craft work for Community Service projects throughout the year. All supplies will be provided.
Take Control with Exercise – Thursdays, 10 a.m. This is an ongoing exercise program, in video form, for all skill levels, that can be practiced while either standing or sitting. This program will strengthen core muscles, improve flexibility and balance while boosting stamina. No fee for this ongoing class.
Card/Table Games – Thursdays, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m. – Join in and play some of your favorite games such as dominoes, left-right-center dice games, Rummikub, Canasta, Mexican Train and more.
Chair Exercise – Fridays, 10:00 a.m. – This exercise program utilizes resistance bands to strengthen your abdominals, lower back and pelvic floor muscles. No fee for this ongoing class.
Bridge – Fridays, 1:00 p.m. Bridge is a mentally challenging card game that offers intellectual and social stimulation. Playing bridge regularly stimulates your brain and helps keep your memory active and your brain alert.
