Grade 6 students from Warren Middle School (WMS) celebrated the Chinese New Year in conjunction with their unit on ancient China as part of the Ancient River Valley Civilizations.
Grade 6 teachers worked together to coordinate cross-curricular activities to creatively teach and celebrate the Chinese New Year.
In their social studies class, Ms. Karen Balich invited students from the Diversity Club to make lanterns with riddles. Club members visited all of Balich’s social studies classes throughout the day to share the riddles they had created. The students also learned about Chinese Zodiac Signs.
In Mrs. Ann Marie Christou and Mrs. Michele Kraminitz’s science classes, the students learned about the Chinese myth explaining the solar eclipse which tied into their unit on the solar system and natural phenomena.
In math class, Mrs. Mary Ellen Weaver and Mr. Kevin Speckin celebrated the Chinese New Year by creating traditional Chinese symbols focusing specifically on how the holiday is celebrated in Chinese culture.
Students in Mrs. Gina Banks and Ms. Cathryn Ticchio’s language arts classes read a non-fiction article on the Chinese New Year with challenging vocabulary and responded to reading comprehension questions. They investigated and discussed the symbolism of the dragon and then watched a San Francisco Chinese New Year parade.
As the Grade 6 Team Leader, Christou was very pleased with the outcome of the entire celebration. “Providing our students with a cross-curricular experience allowed us to celebrate the Chinese New Year and strengthen our bond as Team Blue. We look forward to planning more team bonding activities in the future.”
