Union Rotary’s Eloquence Soiree
On Wednesday, June 5, 2019, The Rotary Club of Union hosted its Annual Eloquence Soiree to honor Union High School’s student winners of the Marvin Orella Speech Contest. The speech contest celebrated it’s 22th year and has given out over $110,000 in scholarships since its inception in 1997.
In addition, Randi Moran, Supervisor of the English Language Arts and Speech Contest Director at Union High School and Barbara Lamort, President of the Union Township Historical Society were presented with the Rotary Excellence in Education Award.
Chaired by Rotarian, Sharon Patel, the evening was a huge success attracting Rotary members and their families as well as Union educators, professionals and residents. After the cocktail hour, guests were privileged to hear the speeches of the top 3 finalists who were not aware of the winning outcome. After the outstanding orations of the young students, scholarships were handed out to Arthanious Shafik ($2,500), Ayokunnumi Faithful Oluwakuyide ($1,500) and Theophilus Awosola ($1,000). Next, the honorees had a chance to address the crowd and be thanked for their continuing connection and support of the community. The evening was capped off with a Basket Auction and Super 50/50 which helped to fund the scholarships for our esteemed students.
The Union Rotary is grateful for the opportunity to challenge and reward the fine students of Union High School and thanks to the community for lending its support of this cause.
The club welcomes any member of the community who might like to join our group in putting “Service above Self.” Meetings are held every Thursday at the Suburban Country Club at 12:15.
