Township of Union – The Township of Union held its annual Operation Clean Sweep, Adopt- A-Park event in May, and welcomed more than 200 residents that took to the streets to clean local parks and recreation areas.
“It’s always wonderful to see the community come together,” said Mayor Manuel Figueiredo, “but it’s even better when we come together with the same vision of investing in our community, and making it a better place for everyone to live.” After signing in at the Department of Public Works and obtaining their “Operation Clean Sweep” t-shirt, participants were then dispatched to different areas, pre-identified by the Department to remove graffiti and clean the Township of litter and debris.
“Maintaining our parks the way that we all enjoy them is a tough job,” said Louis Ulrich, Superintendent of the Department of Public works. “Events like these not only help protect our environment, but bring about a greater sense of appreciation and value for the spaces we all share and enjoy.”
The event brought together various community organizations, Cub Scout groups and families that were looking for ways to get involved. In total, 10 parks were serviced and the event culminated with a picnic at Rabkin Cove where volunteers were treated to food, music and face painting.
“Operation Clean Sweep” is part of the Clean Communities Program, funded by a Clean Communities Grant. The NJ Clean Communities Program is a comprehensive, statewide litter abatement program that has served NJ Residents and visitors for over 25 years.
