The path to Eagle Scout starts early in the scouting career, many skills need to be learned, many merit badges must be earned. Each year scouts attend one or two weeks at summer camp to develop scouting skills and experience the brotherhood of Boy Scouts.
Troop 80 of The First Presbyterian Church has chosen Camp Rodney as its primary summer camp for over 10 years. The beautiful Chesapeake Bay is the backdrop to all the activities of the week. Each scout works on 4 merit badges, choosing from: environmental science, rifle shooting, shot gun, jet skiing, water skiing, photography, archery, nature, lifesaving, swimming, physical fitness, sailing, motor boating, climbing, oceanography, wilderness survival, canoeing, kayaking, pioneering, orienteering, pottery, cooking, radio, electricity, golf, camping, and astronomy.
The highlight of the week for many is the mile-long bay hike through the waters of the Chesapeake at dawn. Dozens of mature bald eagles put on a show for the wide eyed scouts as they walk in chest deep water along the coast of Camp Rodney. The week ends with a blue crab boil where many scouts experience their first crustacean feast.
