Troop 65157 Holds Event for Senior Citizens
Submitted by Lucy Chen, Green Brook Girl Scout Troop #65157 (6th grade)
As a Junior girl scout, the Bronze Award is the highest award you can earn. Our small yet influential Girl Scout troop has identified an issue that we feel truly passionate about: helping seniors in our community. Seven months ago we had our first meeting discussing our ideas, and decided we wanted to tackle the problem of senior isolation. This marked the beginning of a long, exciting, and fulfilling journey as we talked to seniors and researched ways we could help. On August 30, 2022, all of our work came together as we held a planting event with senior citizens to help combat loneliness and brighten their day. We met at the Green Brook Senior Center and worked with the Seniors to make beautiful planters (that they got to keep) with flowers and supplies that we had purchased previously. We also played games and talked and all of us had a great time!
To plan for this event, we split our troop into three smaller committees. The financial group created budgets, planned shopping trips, and solicited donations. The production committee lead the troop in taking videos and pictures throughout the project, which includes making a short film on event preparation and execution. And finally, the event planning committee created a timeline and logistics plan, communicated with the senior center, and worked with the production committee. In addition, they also are creating a guide on how to host senior connection events in order to make this project sustainable. Every single one of these groups helped make this journey possible. We are excited to finish up by making a film that other Scouts can use to get inspired and see where the rest of this journey takes us.
