The History of Education in England at Westfield Historical Society Luncheon

As part of the Westfield Historical Society’s First Wednesday Luncheon series, Dr. Jim Hewitt will be presenting a talk on the history of education in England on March 7, 2018. The event will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the Echo Lake Country Club, 515 Springfield Avenue, Westfield.
Dr. Hewitt will explain the difference between two thoughts of education in England, both of which were formed 200 years ago. One of those thoughts was formed by the Anglican Traditionalist at Oxford and Cambridge,and was to establish morally upright character that would inspire and uplift society and lead the economy. The other thought which was developed and advocated by the “The Rationalists” and the enlightened “Utilitarian” at the upstart London University, defined the positions about the moral foundations for higher education.
Dr. Hewitt grew up and attended schools in Westfield, then went to Calvin College in Grand Rapids for B.A., and UMass/Amherst for M.A., and Ph.D., European History. After studies and academic work at UMass/Amherst, he transitioned into business by attending the Wharton School at University of Pennsylvania. He moved to New York City to work with NYC Transit Authority, and then shifted into commercial real estate beginning with Trinity Church development on Wall Street. Dr. Hewitt actively volunteers at the Old Guard of Summit, the Paper Mill Play House, the New Jersey Festival Orchestra, and The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.

The luncheon fee of $35 (WHS members) or $40 (non-members) includes a three-course meal, coffee/tea, and gratuity. The luncheon fee may be paid at the door. Westfield Historical Society memberships will also be available at the luncheon.
