Cormac O’Brien, author of the recently published “Secret Lives of the First Ladies: Strange Stories and Shocking Trivia from Inside the White House,” will address attendees at an elegant afternoon Tea to be presented by the Kenilworth Historical Society on Saturday, April 28, 2018.
O’Brien’s enlightening and entertaining presentation, based on fascinating material from his book, will highlight many of America’s extraordinary first ladies, from 1789 to date, and relate their unique and oftentimes private ways of adapting to and fulfilling the demands and expectations of their position.
The “Tea with America’s First Ladies” will begin at noon at the Kenilworth Gospel Chapel Hall, 557 Newark Avenue, Kenilworth, New Jersey, where the ambience of a lovely tearoom, creatively accented with first lady decor, is being created for the event. An array of assorted teas, tea sandwiches, scones and desserts will be served. The event also will feature a gift auction and door prizes. Copies of “Secret Lives of the First Ladies” will be available for purchase and may be signed by the author.

Proceeds from the April 28 Tea and Gift Auction will benefit the Kenilworth Historical Society’s Oswald J. Nitschke House (c. 1880) “living history” museum and cultural arts center by helping defray the cost of an elevator that makes all levels of the site fully accessible to everyone.
As a prominent author, O’Brien brings a distinctive voice to the history genre. He has published books on a variety of subjects ranging from natural disasters to U.S. presidents, from ancient empires to the American Civil War. In addition to “Secret Lives of the First Ladies,” O’Brien has authored “Secret Lives of the U.S. Presidents” and “Secret Lives of the Civil War.”
A native of western New York state who now resides in New Jersey, O’Brien has made appearances on NPR, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, The History Channel, and other venues.
The Kenilworth Historical Society (www.kenilworthhistoricalsociety.org) is a volunteer-based, independent, non-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the research, preservation and interpretation of the Oswald J. Nitschke House, local history and culture.
The Kenilworth Gospel Chapel is an independent community Bible church with a congregation of approximately 165 adults and children. The chapel was constructed in 1936 by a number of chapel members, including the family of local pioneer James Arthur, Sr., who built many homes in the area in the late 19th/early 20th centuries and who founded the New Orange Park project.
