Sustainable Berkeley Heights’s Collects Big During Summer Shoe Drive
Submitted by Kimberly Diamond
Sustainable Berkeley Heights collected 132 pairs of sneakers, sandals, boots, and other footwear during its summer shoe drive. Collectively, the shoes totaled 160.6 pounds. These sneakers, sandals, boots, and other footwear are finding their way to those in need, rather than taking up space in a landfill.
According to BusinessGreen, it takes at least 50 years for shoes to decompose in a landfill, and when they do decompose, they release into the environment harmful chemicals that resided in the glue, rubber, and other materials used in the shoes’ construction. By participating in this shoe drive, the Berkeley Heights community has taken a small step in doing its part to address this issue. Sustainable Berkeley Heights thanks friends and neighbors who contributed their shoes.
