Since April showers bring May flowers, Watchung Library offered a Surprise Storytime on May 10, which came with something extra – two special visitors from a florist. Dana Pike, a floral designer with The Martinsville Florist in Martinsville, and her therapy dog, Vegas, who is a Japanese Chin, “surprised” the audience after the story, Fran’s Flower by Lisa Bruce was read. Dana gave everyone a chance to smell the roses, lavender, lilacs, marigolds, scented geraniums, and other flowers that she brought with her. She also showed how plants change from seeds to seedlings to full grown flowers, and where flowers can be found in many everyday products.
Don’t feed growing flowers pizza or cheeseburgers like Fran did in the story! After Dana’s presentation, cupcake paper flowers were made, and the Chinese folktale, The Empty Pot by Demi, was shared.
