SUPPORT THE Garwood VOLUNTEER Fire Department

Submitted by Glenn Miller

Just as area residents and businesses depend on the Garwood Fire Department to be there when they call 9-1-1, the Garwood Volunteer Fire Department relies on the generosity of donations from its Garwood neighbors to help finance the vital, life-saving operations it provides for our community. Each year, your tax-deductible donations helps fund the departments continuing effort to service the community. This year we just finished up our school fire prevention program at Lincoln school for K thru 8th grade and our Monday night pump drills at Washington school where all the kids got to play in the water while we trained.

The Garwood Fire Dept. sponsors many organizations in the Boro and schools. We sponsor two scholarships for senior graduates who plan on continuing their education.

We are also involved with Garwood Rocks where we set up a fire prevention display.

We also are working with the Garwood Girl Scouts,  and our aluminum can collection, the proceeds being donated to St Barnabas hospital burn center.

Our upcoming events will be bringing Santa around the boro once again, on Dec. 9th from 11 a.m. until finished.  Rain date will Dec 16 th.

The Garwood Fire Department is also collecting Toys for Tots this year.

The department has  30 active members, and answers an average of more than 200 calls a year.

“An annual fundraising appeal letter was recently mailed by the Garwood Fire Department to all homes and businesses in Garwood,” explains Chief Allen Tweedle. “I encourage every citizen to consider making a donation to this vitally important community organization. Dedicated volunteers are on call every day here in Garwood. We need them, and the department needs your support.” In addition to its 30 adult members, the Garwood Volunteer Fire Department includes 4 junior members, 8th grade thru high school students, ages 14 and older that assist in emergency calls.  Juniors attend training sessions, participate in junior meetings, and department activities.

The Garwood Fire Department is also looking for volunteers; if interested please call 908 789 8877, leave a message or stop by any Sunday morning 9-11 a.m. or Monday evenings 7-9 p.m. for information on membership.
