Summit Free Public Library Gardening Events
The Summit Free Public Library is pleased to announce four upcoming gardening events for community members of all ages. These programs are perfect for anyone interested in gardening, from beginners to experienced gardeners.
The Little Sprouts Garden Club is a great way for children in Grades K-5 to learn about gardening and participate in special STEAM-focused garden lessons. Led by Children’s Librarian Lisa O’Shaughnessy, the Club will meet on Wednesdays from April to October from 4:00-5:00 p.m. “Little Sprouts hopes to educate and encourage our future community leaders to innovate solutions for sustainability, healthy eating, water safety, and conservation,” says Lisa O’Shaughnessy. Children will help start a community garden, meet science experts, and make delicious recipes from the community garden harvest.
For adults interested in starting their own vegetable garden, Anthony Bracco, owner and founder of Bracco Farms, will present “Plan Your Backyard Victory Garden” on Thursday, April 20th from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Attendees will learn the basics of starting a vegetable garden, including soil preparation, selecting crops and tools, and extending the growing season. This program is funded by the Friends of the Summit Free Public Library.
“Anthony Bracco’s popular Victory Garden Program was inspired in part by increased interest in gardening during the pandemic,” says Robin Carroll-Mann, Adult Program Coordinator at the Summit Library. “He gives people with little or no gardening experience the information they need to provide a sustainable source of healthy food for themselves and their families.”
John Beirne, Curatorial Director of Horticulture at Reeves-Reed Arboretum, will present “Designing with Perennials” on Thursday, May 4th from 7:00-8:00PM. He will discuss some of the most dependable perennials and how to include them in your garden.
On Thursday, May 18th from 7:00-8:00 p.m., Anthony Bracco will return to present another program for adults: “Saving Seeds from Your Garden”. Attendees will learn how to save seeds from popular vegetable varieties. He will cover important topics such as heirloom versus hybrid seeds, crossbreeding, and seed harvesting, drying, and storing. This program is also funded by the Friends of the Summit Free Public Library.
These programs will take place at the Summit Free Public Library, located at 75 Maple Street, Summit, NJ, 07901. Registration is required for each event and can be done on the library’s website at www.summitlibrary.org, or by calling (908) 273-0350, option 3.
