Summit Public Library Announces Virtual Programs for September

September Virtual Programs at the Summit Library

The Summit Free Public Library is set to continue virtual programming via Zoom this September with a number of popular programs being offered.

The library’s well-attended Explore Your World: Minicourses for Adults series kicks off the month on Friday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m. with the return of Dr. Ian Drake of Montclair University. Drake, a patron favorite, will be presenting Landmark Supreme Court Cases throughout History. This six-week minicourse will cover Supreme Court cases that have had a significant impact on society. Each week Drake will discuss the most important decisions that have responded to and shaped American life. From the obscure to the famous (and infamous), this six-week course will highlight the role of the Court in American politics, the economy, and culture. Participants will consider how an institution populated (usually) by nine people with life tenure has shaped American law. Drake will cover how often the Court leads versus follows the politics and culture of the larger society. Finally, he will address the question of whether the Court is, as Hamilton called it, the “least dangerous branch” of the American government.

Best-selling author and record 48-time Moth StorySLAM and 6-time GrandSLAM Champion Matthew Dicks returns to the Summit Free Public Library for a new Storytelling Workshop on Wednesday, September 23 at 7 p.m.! Back by popular demand, the library is pleased that Matthew has agreed to return and present on What to Say, How to Say It, and When Should I Say It?

Matthew will dig a little deeper into storytelling, this time discussing the power and utility of surprise, the strategic deployment of humor, the decisions about what to include and what to leave out, and how to tell those important, enormous, oftentimes unwieldy stories of our lives more effectively. Matthew will also engage attendees in a storytelling game that will help you find and tell your best stories. Open to adults and older teens interested in learning the art of storytelling from an expert!
