Summit Police And High School Students Continue P.A.T.T. Program

The Summit Police Department is proud to announce that it is continuing to build lasting, positive relationships with high school students by partnering with Summit High School to present Police and Teens Together (P.A.T.T.) during the current fall semester. Police and Teens Together is a co-curricular enhancement program which leverages the cooperative relationship between the Police Department and the Summit Public School District in order to further relationship building between Police Officers and the City’s young adults.
The program was first offered to students during the spring semester of the 2014-2015 school year and received a very positive reception from all of the participants. “The Summit Police Department is committed to partnering with our City’s schools to build lasting relationships with students through the presentation of quality co-curricular activities,” said Chief of Police Robert K. Weck. “Last semester’s Police and Teens Together program showed to be very beneficial in establishing meaningful dialogue between students and our Officers. I am proud, given this success, that we have been able to include P.A.T.T. among our many regularly offered community outreach programs.”
Police and Teens Together began as a cooperative effort between the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and Union County Police Agencies in 2000. The curriculum begins with students enrolled in the High School’s Law and Public Policy Class sharing their perception of law enforcement with police officers in a classroom setting. Following days consist of officers dialoging with students, sharing their personal life experiences and giving insight into the stringent professional standards and training requirements to which Officers are held while performing their duties. Students are also given the opportunity to participate in hands-on scenarios which simulate common law enforcement activities such as traffic enforcement, crowd control, and narcotics interdiction.
