New Jersey Local Government Week 2023
The City of Summit is participating in New Jersey Local Government week from Sunday, April 16, through Saturday, April 22. NJ Local Government week is a time for municipalities to bring awareness to the role local government plays in achieving the best life for communities.
The city will kick off the week on Monday, April 17, with a tea with Mayor Radest on Facebook live. The tea will last approximately 15 minutes and allow for questions from viewers. The Communications Office will film virtual video tours of locations including Common Council chamber, the Transfer Station, and Community Center. Equipment used by the police and fire departments and public works will also be highlighted in video segments. One video will be shown each day on social media, the city YouTube channel, and the city website, from Monday, April 17, through Saturday, April 22.
To encourage eighth grade students from Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School to share their civic pride, the city is initiating a “Mayor for the Day” essay contest. Submissions will answer the question: “If you were given a chance to be mayor of Summit, what would you do?” Responses were asked to focus on specific actions that the student would take to make Summit an even better place to live, work, and visit. The winner of the contest will spend a day with Mayor Radest conducting official business including a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new business or facility, tours of city buildings, a meeting with staff, and the Tuesday, April 18, Common Council meeting where they will provide a report to council and the community.
“NJ local government week is a time for municipalities to bring awareness to the role local government plays in achieving the best life for communities,” explains Mayor Nora Radest. “It is our hope that by the end of the week, citizens will have learned something new about municipal operations and how services benefit our everyday lives.”
