Summit Library: Raising a Seeing Eye Puppy

At the Summit Library, Raising a Seeing Eye® Puppy: Big Dreams Start Small!

(above) The Seeing Eye® will be presenting at the Summit Library on Saturday, May 11.

Have you ever thought about raising a guide dog? Or maybe you are curious about how a puppy develops into a guide dog for the blind? Perhaps you’ve brought the kids to our popular Books & Woofs read aloud program that we have once a month during the school year. Did you know those pups come from The Seeing Eye® and by reading to the dogs your kids are helping train them to become guide dogs?!

On Saturday, May 11, 2019 from 2-3 p.m., representatives from The Seeing Eye®, a guide dog non-profit based in Morristown, will be at the library to discuss what is involved in raising a puppy to become a guide dog, answer questions you might have regarding whether or not raising a puppy is the right fit for you and your family, and offer guidance on how to apply to get involved in their guide dog training program.

The program will cover how The Seeing Eye® breeds and places puppies with families who raise guide dogs; what is involved in training a guide dog (puppy ‘do’s and don’ts); and how they instruct blind people in the proper care and handling of the dogs once they’re placed with their new owner.

Did you know not every puppy graduates to become a guide dog? It may be due to temperament, or some other disqualifying characteristic. Think your family might be interested in raising a puppy to become a guide dog? Come to this informative presentation and find out if raising a puppy is right for you—whether you’ve got young children or older kids, fostering a puppy to become a guide dog can be a very rewarding experience.

Our Seeing Eye Guide Dog Presentation is funded through the generosity of The Friends of the Summit Free Public Library. To reserve a spot in this program, call the library at 908-273-0350, option 3, or go to the Event Calendar tab on our website: summitlibrary.org.

While we’re on the Subject of Guide Dogs…

Our next Books & Woofs program is scheduled for Monday, May 20 from 7-8 p.m. Kids in grades 1-5 are invited to visit the library and read to dogs and puppies from The Seeing Eye®. Studies have shown that reading aloud to dogs and puppies is a great way to practice reading—and it’s also incredibly fun! A reservation is recommended. To reserve a spot visit the Event Calendar tab on our website: summitlibrary.org or give the Youth Services Department a call at 908-273-0350, ext. 825.
