Summit High School Students Play Carnegie Hall
The Summit High School Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and Chamber Choir performed at Carnegie Hall on April 2, 2019, as part of the New York Invitational Music Festival.
It was the first time that Summit performing ensembles had performed at Carnegie Hall. Barbara Vierschilling conducted the Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Choir in a performance of Franz Schubert’s Mass in G featuring soloists Annie Milsten (Mezzo-Soprano), Owen McTernan (Baritone), Adrian Gomes (Baritone), and Kathryn Evenson (Soprano). Summit HS Choral Director Dan King prepared the vocal soloists and choir for their performance.
Alex Bocchino and Steve Rapp conducted the Wind Ensemble in performance of John Philip Sousa’s Black Horse Troop, David Maslanka’s Mother Earth, David Gillingham’s with Heart and Voice, and Ennio Moricone’s Gabriel’s Oboe featuring soloists Abigail Brandt, Kelsey Lee on oboe.
As part of the New York International Music Festival, each Summit ensemble was given a clinic by visiting professors from Virginia Commonwealth University. At the conclusion of the concert, both SHS ensembles received Gold ratings for their rousing performances. Overall, students had an wonderful experience as noted by Emily Kane, principal clarinet of the SHS Wind ensemble who stated, “I loved playing in Carnegie Hall. The acoustics were amazing.”
