North Plainfield Summer School Academy is up and running. There are over 400 elementary students attending this district-wide program being held at West End School. Along with academic instruction there are special events happening for these students.
On Monday, July 13, 2015, the North Plainfield Fire Department presented to our summer school students in preschool through second grade. The fire fighters spoke about fire safety and what to do in an emergency. The students were able to tour the fire engine and fire truck, as the fire fighters explained each tool and feature.
On Wednesday, July 15, 2015, Officer David Daneker from the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office visited our preschool and kindergarten students. He brought his partner, Apex, a German Shepherd trained to find narcotics. Officer Daneker spoke to the students about the K-9 unit, the training process, and how Apex does his job. Apex was able to demonstrate his skills to our students. On Monday, July, 20, 2015, our first through fourth grade students received a visit and presentation from Officer Thomas Wallace and Wildman, a Bloodhound trained to track the human scent.
The state police landed their helicopter on the field at West End School on Thursday, July 16, 2015. After seeing the helicopter land, all students were invited to tour the helicopter as the pilot explained its features and uses. This was arranged by the North Plainfield Police Department as a shared event with them as they are holding their NPPD Youth Academy at West End School.
July 16, 2015 was also Dinosaur Day. North Plainfield teacher, John Thomson, presented an interactive assembly to our students. He began with a slide show that explained the myths and realities of dinosaurs, as well as the different types or dinosaurs. Mr. Thompson set up six activity stations that the students were able to rotate between including stencil rubbings, fossils to examine, puzzles, leveled books, a fossil hunt, and a dinosaur walk.
