Join Us for the Fifth Annual NJ Makers Day, March 23
It’s a day to celebrate DIY at the Kenilworth Public Library! Stop by on Saturday, March 23, 2019 between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to take part in NJ Makers Day. We’ll have hands-on stations and live demonstrations celebrating the many aspects of maker culture. Come see what NJ Makers Day is all about! Special activities will include drawing with famed artist Doug Baron, sponsored by Ms. Paula Kowalczuk (in honor of parents Paul and Elvira Kowalczuk) and Mr. & Mrs. James Daurio, and a delightful presentation by the Kenilworth Historical Society featuring teas from plants grown at the Nitschke House. Weave on a Saori weaving loom, courtesy of a generous donation by the Ralph Errington Foundation. Additional activities include a silly putty station, fiber arts demonstrations and much more!
New Jersey Makers Day is a celebration of maker culture across the Garden State. This all-ages event connects individuals with libraries, schools, businesses, and independent makerspaces that support making, tinkering, crafting, manufacturing, and STEM-based learning.

Join us for the monthly READ program
on Thursday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m.
Police Chief John Zimmerman will be the featured community leader. Please join us for a one hour meet and greet, light refreshments will be served.
Additional community leaders will be included in future “Read” posters, emphasizing the importance of reading and libraries throughout our lives.
Members of the community are welcome to contact Library Director Lorraine Ruiz to nominate individuals to be considered for future READ posters. These posters will be created on the library’s E Color Printer which has been funded by The Ralph Errington Foundation.
Broadway musical concert, “Florian Schantz Jazz Combo,” on Saturday, March 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The Florian Schantz Jazz Combo was formed in 2012 by then 9 year old Florian Schantz. Since then, the band has delighted audiences in hundreds of venues in the greater NYC area and in Germany. Their musical influences are Bix Beiderbecke, Wild Bill Davison, Louis Armstrong, Muggsy Spanier, Eddie Condon, Stan Getz, Robert Maxwell, Perez Prado, Ray Conniff, and Mitch Miller. They have played Dixieland and other traditional jazz, Broadway standards, international music, historical music, devotional, ragtime, blues, Latin, and commercial music.
The band will perform Broadway and Hollywood songs. They have a good deal of repertoire in this genre, focusing on either the golden era of Broadway music or a mixture of classic Hollywood anthems and Broadway songs such as “Almost like Being in Love,” If I Were a Rich Man,” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business.”
Book Group “Enduring Love”
The book group will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, to discuss “Enduring Love” by Ian McEwan. Join us for some pleasant conversation and share your thoughts about our latest selection!
Participation in the book discussion group is free and open to all members of the general public, including residents of communities other than Kenilworth. Previous experience with a book group is not required and new members are always welcome. Copies of the book will be available for check out at the circulation desk and residents of communities other than Kenilworth should inquire regarding ways they might be eligible for borrowing privileges at the Kenilworth Public Library.
Wellness Workshop, “Chair Yoga,” on Thursday, April 4, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Rose Luma is a 500 hour certified yoga instructor teaching a range of classes from Vinyasa Yoga, Yogalates, Mediation, Chair Yoga and Kids Gymnastics at the YMCA in both Union and Elizabeth Branches and Kenilworth Senior Center. She also works with corporate offices in New York City providing employees with Chair Yoga and meditation during their lunch break or after the work day. She works with a range of different flexibility levels to receive the same end goal of a deep stretch to increase blood and oxygen flow within the body. Using the breath, she eases you into a deep dream-like state of relaxation to allow the body to release tension.
