Santiago Abut Foundation Awards Annual Scholarship
The Santiago Abut Foundation has awarded the $5,000 2020 Santiago Daniel Abut Memorial Scholarship to Nia King, a graduating senior at Summit High School who will attend Hofstra University and intends to pursue studies in business and entrepreneurship. Nia was chosen from among several applicants, in recognition of her strong academic achievements and solid record of work within the Summit community.
Santiago Daniel Abut (Santi) was an eight-grade student at Summit Middle School, when he unexpectedly passed away in 2008 from a misdiagnosed health condition. Now in its ninth consecutive year, the Santiago Daniel Abut Memorial Scholarship is awarded every year to a Summit High School graduating senior who demonstrates academic merit and character/citizenship. The launching of this scholarship in 2012, which would have been Santi’s senior year at Summit High School, adds special meaning to it, as Santi did not get the chance to go to college, but his family would like to think that he attends college, every year, through and with the students that this scholarship contributes to finance.
