Decorating for the holidays can be a lot of fun and something many of us look forward to doing every year. After all, how often can you have a real live tree in your house?
Besides the Christmas tree, some of us also fill our homes with poinsettia plants, mistletoe and holiday candles. The bright red leaves of the plants, the red and white berries of the mistletoe (not to mention the kissing underneath), and the sparkle of the flames make the season even more festive.
However, you do need to take some precautions with these holiday decorations. Many of us have experienced the trouble that pets and children can get into with the Christmas tree and those oh-so-tempting ornaments. But, it’s some of the other items that you really have to worry about.
Poinsettia plants and mistletoe are somewhat toxic to humans and animals if ingested and should be kept out of reach. If you absolutely have to have them, think about buying the silk versions.
Ribbons used to wrap presents can also be dangerous for pets. Some like to eat them, and if they get stuck in their digestive tracts, they can cause great harm and even death.
Also be wary of burning real holiday candles. These can sear little fingers or paws if played with and even worse, can be knocked over and start a fire. There are many “fake” candles available that look so authentic that you don’t even need the real thing anymore. It doesn’t matter if these LED versions get too close to curtains or other flammable materials or if they’re left unattended. And speaking of fire dangers, make sure your tree stays well hydrated and remember to turn off the strings of lights when you leave the house or go to bed.
Furthermore, while many of us like to display those whimsical nutcrackers, you might want to keep the nuts themselves out of sight. Not only can children choke on them, but for those who are allergic, they may also have a reaction if they so much as touch them.
Make the upcoming holidays safe and happy. With a few precautions, your home can reflect the spirit and joy of the season.
The Scotch Plains Rescue Squad is a volunteer organization of Neighbors Helping Neighbors. With over 90 volunteers, we answer emergency calls not only in Scotch Plains but in surrounding towns as well when needed. Besides answering calls, you will see our ambulances at many special events held in town, such as Scotch Plains Day, the Memorial Day Parade, high school football games, and the summer concerts on the Village Green. We are also available to provide demonstrations for Boys and Girls Scout troops, clubs, and any other group that may be interested in what we do. In addition, we lend out wheelchairs, crutches, canes and other assorted medical equipment free of charge. Our Auxiliary Group holds fund raisers and provides other much needed support for our members. Please reach out to us if there is something we can do for you, or if you would like to become a part of our organization.
