Formed in 1937 by a small group of residents who saw a need in the community, the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad is the oldest volunteer squad in Union County and one of the oldest in New Jersey. Today, the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad is comprised of 83 members, cadets, and the squad auxiliary. Active members are full Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s), certified by the State of New Jersey. EMT’s can do everything from setting a broken leg to restarting a heart in cardiac arrest.
Other than responding to emergency calls, the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad supports numerous Township activities and events such as high school sporting events, the Italian Festival, movies and concerts on the Village Green, and Trunk or Treat. Additionally, the Rescue Squad has a large assortment of wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, and other medical equipment which members of the community can use, free of charge.
