SCLSNJ Continues to Offer Programs, Services to Business Professionals in 2019

It seems like everyone is gigging. We all know a rideshare driver, an Etsy shop owner, or a freelance writer or artist. In response to County needs, the Somerset County Library System of New Jersey (SCLSNJ) continues their dedication to the evolving business professional in 2019, with resources and programs that focus on the gig economy, millennials, social media marketing, and more.

“Providing diverse collections and responding strategically to the changing needs of our communities is just one way SCLSNJ librarians are meeting the core priorities set out in the library’s strategic plan,” said Manny Miracle, SCLSNJ business librarian. “Adding titles to SCLSNJ’s business collection will help guide readers to opportunities they may not have been aware of, raise awareness of the pros and cons of working in the gig economy, and help business owners understand the role gig workers may play in their companies.”

The gig economy refers to short-term jobs, also known as gigs. According to Forbes magazine, as of 2018 the gig economy represented 34 percent of the U.S. workforce. This trend is expected to continue to grow in 2019 and beyond.

Library cardholders can plan to reserve a new gig-focused business kit in the spring of 2019. The Gig Economy kit will feature a range of materials including curated books, a topical magazine, and other timely resources.

In addition to new titles in the collection and the Gig Economy kit, SCLSNJ will offer programs to help prepare small business owners and entrepreneurs for new and existing trends in 2019.

“Surveyed industry experts revealed that certain issues for the small business owner, such as the importance of excellent customer service, will remain constant in 2019, but small business owners may still encounter new challenges,” said Catherine DeBerry, SCLSNJ adult services supervisor. “A well prepared business plan, comprehensive market research, and a strategic social media marketing plan continue to be important for the success of a small business. Side hustles and full-time gigs will become increasingly important for both the aspiring entrepreneur and the small business owner.”
