Rutgers President, Robert L. Barchi to Speak in Westfield

robert-l-barchiThe extraordinary changes that have marked the history of Rutgers University will be a main focus of an upcoming talk in Westfield by the university’s president.
Robert L. Barchi, who lived in Westfield when he was a youngster, will discuss “Rutgers—Celebrating 250 Years” in the final lecture of the 2016 Hale Speaker Series. The hour-long talk is slated for Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Bauer Branch of the Westfield Y at 422 East Broad St., Westfield.
In his annual report to the University Senate, Barchi noted the excitement about such initiatives as the emerging master plan for Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, the construction of new buildings on the school’s campuses, and the optimism tied to the university’s third year as a member of the Big Ten. The Rutgers 250 activities included many events as well as two visits by President Barack Obama, including his delivery of the anniversary commencement address.
Barchi, who holds M.D. and Ph D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, came to Rutgers after serving as president of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He holds board certification in neurology and has published widely in his field.
As a side interest, Barchi collects clocks and watches from the 17th and 18th centuries; he also designs and constructs precision clocks in his basement machine shop.
The Hale Speaker Series, now in its ninth year, is named in honor of the late Lee and Anne Hale, who were active in community affairs and longtime library patrons. Their daughter, Barbara, is a member of the series committee. Funding comes from The Anne and Lee Hale Fund and The Thomas Glasser Foundation.
The Barchi talk is free and open to the public but pre-registration is required by signing up at www.wmlnj.org or by calling 908-789-4090 ext. 0.
Linnea Rhodes serves as head of the Hale Speaker Series committee whose members also include Sherry Cronin, Mary Orlando and Tina Lesher.
