Roosevelt Intermediate School teacher Brian Vieth was awarded the 2017 Dedication to Education Award during a ceremony at Monmouth University on April 2. The Westfield teacher, who also is an adjunct professor at Monmouth University, was the only teacher to receive the prestigious award. In a letter informing Vieth of the honor, the Executive Board of Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education, wrote, “They have chosen you for your extraordinary dedication and commitment to the field of education.”
Vieth has been a teacher of Social Studies at Roosevelt Intermediate School for 20 years. He received his Master of Arts in Teaching and Bachelor of Arts in History from Monmouth University. In addition, this year he served as Adjunct Professor in the University’s School of Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, where he taught undergraduate men and women who will be entering the teaching profession.
Upon receiving the award, Vieth addressed those undergrads: “An essential attribute of a successful educator is to encourage students to participate, be risk takers, and work collaboratively as a learning community. My advice is that all the instructional practices and effective methods of teaching you are learning here at Monmouth University and utilizing in your student teaching fieldwork will follow with success, once an inviting, safe, and caring classroom culture is established.”
Vieth added, “Surrounding myself with caring and motivating colleagues has helped me reach a stage where I can proudly hold this award as a mark of my service to the field of teaching.”
One of his proud supporters, Westfield Social Studies Supervisor K-12, Andrea Brennan, was on hand to congratulate Vieth on April 2. Back in Westfield, Roosevelt Principal Stewart Carey, added his words of praise: “On behalf of the staff and administration, I am thoroughly pleased that Brian has received this award. Brian has all the tangible qualities that are needed for a great instructor. He has made great connections with his students and has shown the same collaboration with staff members. He is a wonderful asset to the school. I am quite sure that the qualities that he demonstrates here, he brings to Monmouth.”
