Do you have plans Tuesday night? The Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad (BHVRS) wants to meet you! We are opening our doors to the community every Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m., at 379 Snyder Ave. Come meet our members, learn about the rescue squad, and check out our new ambulance. Children are welcome.
“The open house is a great way to get to know some of the members of your local rescue squad and learn more about what we do,” says Marc Schnitzer, EMT, 2nd Lieutenant, who joined in 2015. “You will probably be surprised to learn that Berkeley Heights is one of the few remaining rescue squads run entirely by volunteers or that most of our members had no prior experience in health care before they joined. Bring the kids, your questions, and stop by for coffee!”
Schnitzer had been interested in joining the rescue squad for years. However, he didn’t take the leap to sign up until he visited the rescue squad’s table at a street fair and chatted with some of the members.
“I immediately felt I made the right decision when I joined. The squad needed more volunteers, and I felt compelled to help them continue providing life-saving emergency medical services for our neighbors,” says Schnitzer. “Through the BHVRS, I have met new people and learned more about our town. Most importantly, it is an empowering feeling to have the ability to help those in need at any given point in time.”
For 75 years, the BHVRS has proudly served its community by providing life-saving emergency medical services. We respond to more than 800 calls a year including falls, motor vehicle accidents, and medical emergencies. The BHVRS never charges for any of its services and is funded almost entirely on donations. We are a friendly face in the community—standing by at town and school events, educating the public about CPR and First Aid, and offering mutual assistance to neighboring towns.
