Following their tradition of spotlighting local Township businesses, the Committee of the Township of Union named The Red Cadillac their May Business of the Month. Accepting the award were business owner Joe Montes and members of his family.
“The Red Cadillac not only has a reputation for providing great food, drink and comfort,” said Mayor Manuel Figueiredo, “but they are valued community partners that are truly invested in seeing our Township thrive.”
As part of the spotlight, each chosen business is presented with an award from the Committee and their business is highlighted as a part of their televised Committee Meeting.
Joe Montes and his family have a long history in the Union restaurant industry. Starting with Primos Restaurant in 1987 up until their most recent venture – The Red Cadillac. Together with his wife and three children, Montes created The Red Cadillac concept in 2010.
In a time of crisis where there was a lack of jobs, financing, un-affordable mortgages etc. they decided that everyone needed a place that offered comfort, along with great food and drink.
To test their concept, they changed their signage to read “Mexican Food…Yes or No… Text Your Vote….” after 4 weeks they had their answer with a resounding 2011 votes in favor of their venture.
Since then, the Red Cadillac has served up their signature Mexican comfort every Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and have been the epitome of excellent community partners.
They support school activities and events, support local teams and charities and participate in organized events like “Taste of Union” and “Santa in Blue.”
During Hurricane Sandy, due to their large Social Media presence, they were able to connect the community to what was going on around town. They became a “Charging Station” for anyone in need of power and took initiative to relay important information to residents.
In their 6 years, the Red Cadillac has been recognized and supported by The New York Times and The Star Ledger; they were Voted #1 Mexican by New Jersey Monthly and have been featured on Good Day New York and Fox 5. They are in current negotiations with N.J. based Lairds Bottling & Distillery Co. to bottle their homemade infused tequila.
