The Art League of the Chathams 2023 Rosemary Howlett Scholarship Award was presented to Chatham High School Senior Advanced Placement artist and National Art Honors Society President, Rachel Novak, from Chatham Township.
The Rosemary Howlett Award was named after late president, Rosemary Howlett. She merged the two Chatham Art Leagues and was renamed, The Art League of the Chathams (or ALC), when she became president in 2007. During her realm, she established a $1,000 art scholarship for a Chatham High School graduating senior who was outstanding in art and planned to pursue art as a career.
Aside from her love of art, Rachel excels in athletic activities. She played lacrosse, ran track and is an enthusiastic hiker. She receives inspiration from hiking in the Redrocks of Colorado.
Rachel will begin her college career at Layola University in Los Angeles, California. She will major in Art History which includes Studio Art; she hopes to go on to TV Production.
Asking Rachel why she chose Loyola, her reply was because of location (she loves California), the school spirit, and their art programs.
Rachel credits her Chatham High School art teachers, Mrs. Candace Hull and Mr. Eric Hreha, who encouraged her interest in art and supported her choice for her future.
Besides her parents, Rachel lives with her younger sister, Vivian who will be a freshman at Chatham High School and is artistic like her big sister. To compliment the Novak family, there are two Australian Cattle dogs: Sammy and Rooster, and a cat called “Steve”.
The Art League of the Chathams (ALC) has three shows a year at the Chatham Twp. Municipal Building, 58 Meyersville Road, Chatham Twp. and is open to new members. For more information, go to artleagueofthechathams.org.
