Quartet Brings Philadelphia Jazz Sound

On May 14, 2017, at 2:00 p.m., the First Presbyterian Church of Stirling will present jazz saxophone player Sam Bishoff and his quartet who are bringing the Philadelphia jazz sound to Stirling. This will be the group’s second appearance in Stirling.
The Sam Bishoff Quartet is comprised of some of the top upcoming musicians from Philadelphia. The group plays arrangements of American Songbook standards as well as the the original compositions of Sam Bishoff. Bishoff combines his unique humor and nuance with swing sensibilities to create intellectual yet feel-good tunes.
Sam Bishoff is a young upcoming saxophonist, arranger, and teacher in the Philadelphia area. Sam is currently finishing up his last semester at Temple University, where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s of Music in Jazz Studies. He has studied under Dick Oatts, Ben Schachter, Tim Warfield, Greg Kettinger, as well as Seattle legend Alexey Nikolaev. Sam has performed with such musicians as Larry McKenna, Dan Monaghan, Mike Frank, and Mike Crotty.
Hailing from Baton Rouge, Silas Irvine is an accomplished and in demand Pianist in Philadelphia. He is a regular member of the Temple Big Band and Chelsea Reed and the Fair Weather Five, and has played with such musicians as Justin Faulkner, Jon Faddis, and Ken Peplowski. He has studied with Josh Richman, Bruce Barth, and Tom Lawton.
Drew Gaunce is one of the busiest young bassists in the Philadelphia region, having played with Terell Stafford, Dan Monaghan, and Eric Wortham. He has studied with Madison Rast and David Wong.
Anthony Murgidi is a percussionist and educator in the Philadelphia area. He has studied drumset with Steve Fidyk and Mike Ducassoux and percussion under Phillip O’Banion and Bill Wozniak. He has played in various venues around the Philadelphia area in jazz, rock, classical, and musical theater settings. Currently, Anthony is the percussion director and assistant jazz band director at Springfield High School in Springfield, PA.

This will be the ninth concert in the Church’s concert series for the 2016 – 2017 season. Admission, as always, is free. A short reception will follow the concert at which attendees may meet the performers. Refreshments will be served.
