Pop Warner Cheer Teams Make History Again

Watchung Hills Pop Warner (WHPW) Cheer made history again in their 2015 season. The organization has never before had both of their competitive cheer teams qualify to compete at the national level in back to back years.
In order to qualify to compete at Nationals, the teams have to advance in a series of competitions throughout their season. The first of the competitions is at the local level for the league, which is the Jersey Valley Conference. The Junior Pee Wee (JPW) team took first place and the Junior Midget (JRM) Team took second. Next up was the New Jersey State Championships. Again, both cheerleading squads moved on, with the JRM team capturing the State Champion title and the JPW team nabbing second in the State. The girls then faced the Regional Competition against other states in the region which include Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Both Wolverine squads took first runner-up and qualified to attend Nationals.
The Pop Warner National Competition was held in Orlando, FL and took place the week of December 5th to 12th at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The JPW team took the National Champion title, while the JRM team placed second in the Nation, both in their respective size and level categories.
For the cheerleaders, the road to Disney was not smooth this year. Both teams sustained injuries, personal losses, and resignations of teammates all at key times throughout the season.
The Junior Pee Wee coaching staff includes Head Coach Lisa Checchio, Assistant Coaches Dina Grochowski, Jackie Johnson, Noelle Mortillo, and Heather Saum, with Team Mom Liz Papazian.
