When the United Methodist Church of Summit’s first Open Mic Night season began, few could have foreseen the incredible level of talent that performers and listeners alike would witness, nor the emotional experience that each evening would provide. This free monthly event, held every last Friday of the month between September and May, was intended to grant performers the chance to explore their talents and just be themselves in front of an audience, sometimes for the very first time. From the very first evening, it was clear that the format was special, the enthusiasm real and the community ready to embrace it.
In its first nine months, Open Mic Night hosted more than 50 performers including: local singer-songwriters playing and singing their own compositions as well as versions of well-known songs; high school age kids, college students and local choir members delighting folks with Broadway tunes and even a 10-year old with a voice yet to be discovered; a harmonica player and a classical guitarist; poetry, dramatic readings and interpretive dance; stand-up comedy; and rock bands made up of local students.
Open Mic Night is just as it is billed: open to all, providing performers with a welcoming, non-judgmental, non-competitive venue to explore and express their talents. The informal coffee-bar and stage is set up with microphones, a piano and keyboards, guitars and drums, as well as non-alcoholic drinks and snacks.
