Raising Funds for NP Scholarships
Submitted by Linda Kale
Come rain, shine or pandemic, the NP Lions Club Golf Committee was determined to hold the 23rd Frank A. Pizzi, Jr. Memorial Golf Outing. Despite being delayed by more than 2 months and having limited time to put the event together, the outing was a tremendous success. It was a great feeling just to be out on the links competing – or trying to compete – after months of lockdown. Besides being a fun-filled day, it helped the NP Lions Club meet its fund-raising goal, including enabling us to grant three scholarships for graduating New Providence High School seniors in 2021. The golf tournament is named after the Honorable Frank A. Pizzi, Jr., former NP Lions president, the town Judge and a distinguished community leader who gave selflessly to help our community. It is in this tradition that the Lions continue to give back to New Providence.
A Special Thanks!
Thanks to the many folks who helped make the event a success by sponsoring holes or other amenities (lunch, etc.). We would like to especially recognize the tournament sponsor, Lantern Hill Senior Living Community, as well as many LH residents who contributed. Investors Bank was also a major corporate sponsor. Other contributors included Wiss & Co, Providence Liquors and DeFalco & Co. All contributions received from the sponsors are tax deductible and are used to support New Providence, our residents, and many other local charitable causes.
The Results – Let the Trash Talking Begin!
Sixty-seven golfers joined the scramble format at the beautiful and challenging Fox Hollow Golf Club on a near-perfect day. Using a best-ball format, the winning foursome of Tom Foti, Chris Bisaccia, Jeff Nook and Casey Rust reclaimed their first-place trophy with a sizzling 8 under par. Some foursomes looked a little rusty, blaming the pandemic, and just could not keep up with these ringers!
The Longest Drive was… Unreal in more ways than one!
Most outings have a longest drive contest and the Pizzi tournament was no different. The par 5, number 10 hole, at Fox Hollow is a buster with a drive over water into a steep uphill dogleg left. With a good drive, a real golfer gets over the pond and up to the top of the hill in two strokes. When my foursome came up on the Longest Drive sign, it was posted way past the top of the hill, on the downward crest in the center of the fairway. It had a name and the number 77 on it. Comments like, “who invited a gorilla to the tournament” were heard. Also, what the heck does “77” stand for?” Well, it is the golfer’s age! Al StLouis’s drive cut the dog leg, making effective use of the cart path, was a monster. One heck of a drive for anyone!
