October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 @ 4:30-7:30PM – NP Chess Club (Kids, Teens & Adults)

Learn to play chess from the NP Chess Club! Instructional Lectures & Strategy from 4:30-5:30 in the Conti Room, followed by play from 5:30-7:30. Open to kids, teens, and adults. Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Register at least 1 day in advance at npchessclub.org

October 2 & 19 @ 7 PM – 8:30 PM – Knit/Crochet Night (Adults & Teens)

Finally, a book group with no assigned reading! Join us for a free bagel from NP Bagel Cafe & tell us about what you’ve been reading and which books you’ve enjoyed recently. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, join us for “Coco”. 

October 5 at 6:30 PM – 8:10 PM: “El Regreso/ The Return” (Adults)
The Return/ El Regreso will be shown in the Conti Room for Hispanic Heritage Month.  This delightful life-changing journey back to Costa Rica is unrated. After living 10 years in New York, 30-year-old Antonio returns to San José, where he is forced to deal with the realities he ran away from. A perspective of a middle-class family dealing with loss, insecurities, and identity in multiple forms. Winner of Best International Feature at the New York Latino Film Festival. 

October 5 @ 7:30 PM – Roma Words, Roma Worlds (Adults)

Come to the debut meeting of this new hybrid book group, which is co-sponsored by the Roma Peoples Project at Columbia University.  The group will meet every two months to discuss books by Roma authors. Join via zoom or attend in person in the Coddington Room. This month’s book is “The Stopping Places: a Journey through Gypsy Britain” by Damian Le Bas. Join the NP Math Club and hone your problem-solving skills while meeting with other math enthusiasts. Meetings are held every Friday at the NP Library from 3:45-4:45PM. Run by NP Teens, open to students in 2-12th grades. Email NPMLTeens@gmail.com to register.

October 7 @ 10:30 AM-4 PM – Craft Fair (All Ages)

Shop for hand-crafted goods from local artisans while supporting the library at the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library 17th annual craft fair! The sale will include pottery, jewelry, home decor, quilts and more and take place in the Conti Family Room.

October 8, 22 @ 2 PM – 3 PM – College Essay Help (Teens)

Register for a half hour slot to work on your college essay with a tutor. A professional writing tutor and instructor of Honors Research Writing will help you get your college essay ready to submit. Scheduling preferences given to High School seniors. Email NPMLTeens@gmail.com 

October 7, 21  @ 10 AM – 4 PM CRAFTERDAY (Children)  

Come by the Coddington Room and use the materials and instructions that have been left out on the tables.  Take home what you create.  While supplies last!   This program is made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

Tutoring sessions for students who are looking for help with the math portion of the SAT. High School students are invited to come discuss the sections they need help with. Run by a NP Teen. Email NPMLTeens@gmail.com.

October 9 @ 11 AM – Soundstage Presents Italian Music (Kids)

Soundstage 4 Kids presents an interactive show for kids of Italian music from the old country to the U.S.A. in celebration of Italian Heritage month.  This program is made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library. Conti Room.

October 9 @ 6:30 PM – 9 PM – Batter Up – Let’s Talk Baseball (All Ages)

Baseball enthusiasts are invited to discuss teams, players and issues of the sport with other baseball fans. Now in its ninth year, this group of mostly seniors welcomes all ages to join the discussion.  Email the library at rsvp@newprovidencelibrary.org to register.

October 10 @ 1 PM – Movie Matinee: “Somewhere in Queens” (Adults)

“Somewhere in Queens” will be screened in the Conti Room. This rated R dramedy, directed by Ray Romano, follows a simple Italian American family in Queens: Leo and Angela, who embrace their family life one day at a time and their shy high school student.  When their son finds his passion on the basketball court, he starts dreaming big. Soon, his family must confront their expectations about parenthood, success, and the joy of discovering oneself. Movie screenings are made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

October 10 @ 4 PM – European Travel Tips and Tools with Guidebook Author Rick Steves (Adults)

Join guidebook author and TV host Rick Steves online as he shares the latest in smart European travel. In this entertaining, information-packed slideshow lecture, Rick will teach you the secrets of safe, smart, inexpensive travel — low on stress and high on fun. You’ll learn how to travel smoothly and affordably by planning an efficient itinerary, eating and sleeping well, avoiding crowds, packing smartly, and more. October 11  @ 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM Snap Circuit Jr. Club (Kids)

The Snap Circuit Jr. Club is back for children 1st grade and up.  Learn about electronics, science, technology and engineering with mini experiments on your circuit board.  The club will meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month.  

October 12 @ 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM – Book Group “The Last Slave Ship” by Ben Raines (Adults)

The book group will discuss “The Last Slave Ship: the True Story of How Clotilda was Found, Her Descendants, and an Extraordinary Reckoning” by Ben Raines, the journalist who discovered the ship’s remains. This is the true story of the last ship to carry enslaved people to America, the remarkable town its survivors founded after emancipation, and the complicated legacy their descendants carry with them. Copies available to check out one month prior.

October 14 @ 1 PM – 2 PM Rocks from the Sky: a Meteorite Exploration with astronomer Wayne Zuhl (Kids and Families)

Join Wayne for a hands-on journey into the world beyond Earth’s atmosphere.   Learn about amazing meteorites and what they teach us about the universe.  Don’t miss this opportunity to touch the stars!

October 15 @ 3 PM – Aideen O’Donnell, Harpist (All Ages)

Critically acclaimed harpist and vocalist Aideen O’Donnell will perform Irish music in the first concert of the annual series sponsored by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library. Aideen O’Donnell has previously performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Keswick Theatre in Philadelphia, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and the Helix in Dublin. Free, all are welcome. The concert will take place in the Conti Room.

The book group will discuss “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston. This 1937 classic is an enduring Southern love story sparkling with wit, beauty, and heartfelt wisdom. Told in the captivating voice of a woman who refuses to live in sorrow, bitterness, fear, or foolish romantic dreams, it is the story of fair-skinned, fiercely independent Janie Crawford, and her evolving selfhood through three marriages and a life marked by poverty, trials, and purpose. Come check out our newest series! Each month a High School junior or senior will lead a session to teach younger students about niche topics that may not be covered in school. October’s topic is Impressionism, the 19th century art movement. A great opportunity for younger students to learn from high school upperclassmen in a fun setting. For students in grades 3-8. October 19 @ 6-8 PM – Artist Reception for Thomas Dackow and Gerald Vogel (Adults)

Join the Friends of the Library for a reception and meet Thomas Dackow and Gerald Vogel, whose joint photography exhibit reveals the uncommon beauty of the commonplace and evokes treasured memories of places and experiences. The exhibit runs through the end of November. Everyone is welcome to attend. 

October 24  @ 1 PM – 2 PM – Cookbook Club (Adults)

Bring a cookbook or a recipe that you like to share with the group, or even cook and bring the dish itself if you’re feeling inspired. The library provides plates, utensils, napkins and a microwave to reheat dishes. Soups/stews and everything pumpkin are this month’s theme. Lego Club is back and will meet usually on the 4th Wednesday of each month!  Build a creation to fit the monthly theme or just make your own creation.  Themed creations will be on display in the children’s room until the following month.

October 26 @ 7:00 PM – A Lifetime of Writing: A Virtual Conversation with Bestselling Author John Irving

You are in for a treat when you join us for a virtual conversation with John Irving as he chats about not only his most recent novel, The Last Chairlift, but also about his prolific body of work and a lifetime spent writing. Irving’s first novel was published when he was just twenty-six years old.
