August 3, 10, 17, 24 @ 1pm – Board on Thursdays (Teens)

Looking for a way to keep cool in the hot afternoons? A variety of board games will be set up in the Teen Area on Thursday afternoons. No registration needed.

August 3 @ 7 PM – They Only Come Out at Night: Bats (All Ages)

Learn all about bats — especially about the seven species of bats that make their home in the nearby Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge – with Randi Emmer of the Friends of the Great Swamp.  Adults, teens and families are welcome to this one hour program which will then be followed by Q & A.  This program was made possible by your donations to the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

August 5 @ 3 PM – 4:30 PM – Movie – Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game (Adults)

The unrated comedy drama “Pinball” will be screened in the Conti Family Room. An unsettled writer finds solace and confidence in one thing he has mastered: pinball. When a police raid destroys the only machines he can find in 1970s New York City, he learns the game is illegal. Roger reluctantly joins forces with the Music and Amusement Association to overturn the ban while falling in love with an artist and single mother. 

August 7 & 17 @ 7 PM – 8:30 PM – Knit/Crochet Night (Adults & Teens)

August 8 @ 1 PM – 2:30 PM – Movie Matinee: “Moving On” (Adults)

“Moving On” will be screened in the Conti Room. Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin star as estranged friends who reunite to seek revenge on the petulant widower (Malcolm McDowell) of their recently deceased best friend in this R-rated comedy/drama. Movie screenings are made possible by the Friends of the New Providence Memorial Library.

August 8 @ 7 PM – 8:15 PM – Artist Reception for Harry Douglas (Adults)

You’re invited to a reception celebrating the new art exhibit by Harry Douglas, who has retired after 31 years of teaching fine arts and ceramics at Mendham High School to pursue his creative interests. His paintings will be on exhibit in the Conti Room and on the walls of the quiet reading area through the end of September.  Everyone is welcome.

Attention all summer readers!  Come to the library’s front lawn for crafts, games, treats and fun to celebrate summer reading. No registration required. In case of rain, a slightly modified event will be held in the Conti Room.

August 10 @ 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM – Book Group “Vanderbilt” (Adults)

The book group will discuss “Vanderbilt: the Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty” by Anderson Cooper. Cornelius Vanderbilt’s great-great-great-grandson, Anderson Cooper, joins historian Katherine Howe to explore the story of his legendary family and their triumphs and tragedies, from the wharves of Staten Island to the lavish drawing rooms of Gilded Age Fifth Avenue, from the ornate summer palaces of Newport to the courts of Europe. Copies available to check out at the front desk one month before the discussion.

August 14 @ 6:30 PM – 9 PM – Batter Up – Let’s Talk Baseball (All Ages)

Baseball enthusiasts are invited to discuss teams, players and issues of the sport with other baseball fans. Now in its ninth year, this group of mostly seniors welcomes all ages to join the discussion.  Email the library at rsvp@newprovidencelibrary.org to register.

August 15 @ 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM – Book Group: “The Sun Does Shine” by Anthony Ray Hinton (Adults)

The book group will discuss “The Sun Does Shine” by Anthony Ray Hinton and Lara Love Hardin. An urgent, emotional memoir from Anthony Ray Hinton, one of the longest-serving condemned death row inmates to be found innocent in America. This New York Times bestseller was an Oprah’s Book Club pick in 2018. Copies available to check out one month prior to the discussion.

Bring a cookbook or a recipe that you like to share with the group, or even cook and bring the dish itself if you’re feeling inspired. The library provides plates, utensils, napkins and a microwave to reheat dishes. This month’s theme is seasonal vegetarian recipes (for all your farmer’s market/CSA bounty!). August 30 @ 2 PM – A Year Inside College Admissions: A Virtual Author Talk with Jeff Selingo

Spend an hour with bestselling author Jeff Selingo, who immersed himself in the world of admissions for a year to answer the question on the minds of teenagers and their parents: how do colleges select their freshman class?  The result is his most recent book, Who Gets In and Why: A Year Inside College Admissions, named one of the 100 Notable Books of 2020 by the New York Times. For the book, Jeff was embedded in three admissions offices — the University of Washington, Emory University, and Davidson College — and follows a group of high-school seniors through the process and players behind the scenes, including the marketers, the financial-aid consultants, and the rankers.
