Signs of Spring
Warren Township Schools
Grade 1 students from Mt. Horeb School received a big surprise when their little hatchlings broke free from their shells recently. Students in Ms. Cicalese, Mrs. Harris, and Mrs. Maag’s classes have been closely monitoring their classroom visitors.
Each class has been learning about the lifecycle of chickens while simultaneously caring for the little chicks! Before the chicks hatched, each class was responsible for turning the eggs and keeping an eye on the temperature of the incubator.
The students love their new feathery classmates and enjoy the sweet sounds of their chirps. Although not every student was comfortable handling the small chicks, all of the students who did, were gentle and paid special attention to treating the delicate animals with love and care.
On Friday, March 11, the chicks made the trip back to Quiver Farms in Pennsburg, PA. Caring for hatchlings is a long-standing tradition in Mt. Horeb School and the students and teachers look forward to it each year. Ms. Cicalese adores observing her class interact with the chicks. “This project created lifelong lessons and memories but best of all we were able to see the children’s smiling faces throughout this whole experience.”
