Mountainside Public Library September 2024

September marks the beginning of our autumn programming at the Mountainside Public Library. We continue our various story times for families and children as well as our adult programs and special events for all ages. The Friends of the Mountainside Library will also be holding their Fall Book Sale in September from September 17th- September 21st. The library will be resuming Saturday hours from 9:30am-5pm beginning on September 7th.

Programs for Adults

Sept. 5th (4pm-5pm): AARP Speaker: Social Security: Understanding Your Benefits. Speaker Richard Satyavan will explain the facets of Social Security (retirement, survivors, and disability/benefits) the options for when to claim your retirement benefits and implications of working while collecting benefits. Free to Attend. Registration is recommended. Call the library or email spicaro@mountainsidelibrary.org.

Sept. 6th, 13th, 20th & 27th (1pm) Friday afternoon movies.

Sept. 9th (12pm) Monthly Documentary: Babies. Filmmaker Thomas Balmès travels to Namibia, Mongolia, Tokyo and San Francisco to profile four ethnically diverse babies and document their experiences during the earliest years of their lives. 

Sept. 9th (6:30pm) Monthly Book Club Meeting. This month’s book discussion will be about Long Bright River by Liz Moore.

Sept. 12th (5:30pm) Board Game Night. Connect with friends and family by playing board games and card games. You may bring your own games or borrow one of the board or card games provided. Open to families. Children may attend with adult supervision. No registration required.

Sept. 13th (11am-12pm) NJ Sharing Network: Organ Donations. Would you like to learn more about organ donations, how to become a donor, and more? Learn from the NJ Sharing Network . Free to attend. Registration recommended.

Sept. 26th (6pm-7pm) Cliff’s Cooking Prep Demonstration: Herbs and Spices. Learn about herbs, spices, basic needs and cooking wines with self-taught home cook Cliff.

Sept. 28th (2pm) Jeff Rodimer, Author of “Shadows of Glory”. Join us for peanuts and Cracker Jacks and let us take you out to the ball game with local author and baseball enthusiast, Jeff Rodimer.  From death threats to shoe polish, heartwarming to heartbreaking, Rodimer will recount lesser known, but fascinating stories of the World Series as covered in his book, Shadows of Glory. Baseball novices and seasoned fans alike won’t want to miss this warm up to the World Series. Books will be available for sale or bring your own copy to have signed. All attendees may participate in a drawing to win 4 tickets to the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center. This free program is geared toward adults, but interested children ages 9 and older may attend with an adult.

Sept. 30th (6-7pm): Cheese Tasting: You will smile and say “cheese” at this fun, informative, and delicious a cheese tasting event with Brittany Bisset from The B’s Cheese in Scotch Plains. Space is limited. Registration and a $15 fee per person is required in advance. Call the library or emailspicaro@mountainsidelibrary.org.

Programs for Youth

Sept. 24th (10am-10:30am) Cuddle Story Time: Nursery rhymes, simple stories and songs for children up to 2 with their caregivers and siblings. No registration required.

Sept. 25th (10am-10:45am) Family Story Time: Stories, rhymes, songs and a craft for preschool children and their caregivers. No registration required.

Sept. 25th (11:15am-12pm) Babies-in-Arms: A lap-sit story time for the littlest ones. Time to visit afterwards. No registration required.

Sept. 26th (10am-10:30am) Yoga Story Time: with Jennifer from Little Pathfinders. For preschoolers and a caregiver. Arrive early to get a spot. No registration required.

Sept. 26th (1pm-1:30pm) Miss Jolie’s Storytime & Dance Party: Searching for Good Luck. For all ages. Miss Jolie will read her children’s book “Searching for Good Luck”, while weaving in music, dancing and mindful moments! Your children will explore different emotions and discover what it means to feel “lucky”. This program is all about GRATITUDE, and instills mindfulness for children through reading, breathing, movement and of course, having fun! Registration is required.
